Zaid bin Amr - The Passionate Monotheist of Pagan Arabia
By: Shaikh Zafar Ul Hasan Al Madani

Zaid bin Amr used to worship Allah without associating any partners with Him. He used to prostrate for a long time weeping while supplicating. He used to invoke, “I know there is no Allah besides you but I do not know how to worship you”. He used to say, “My Lord is the Lord of Ibrahim and My religion is the religion of Ibrahim”. He used to correct the people of Makkah and invite them to Touhid.

Once a goat was slaughtered on the altar of one idol and he was invited to join the feast. Zaid refused to participate and said, “I see ignorance in you and what you are doing is forbidden”. The people wondered why it was forbidden so he explained, “This goat was created by Allah and no one else. The sustenance for this goat was also provided by Allah through rain water which was sucked by the earth and caused the grass to grow. This goat is created by Allah and He provided food and drink for it. Why should the goat be slaughtered to please the idol who has not done anything for the goat”. He continued, “Therefore it is haram to eat the meat of any animal who is slaughtered in the name of anyone other than Allah and an animal should be slaughtered only with the name of Allah”. He was promoting Touhid in those days before the Qur’anic verse on prohibition were revealed. This is the proof that real deen is fitrah, the natural Deen and it can be understood without the presence of a Prophet, too.

Zaid was giving an argument known as ayat e Qauwniya which means proving a point by stirring the common sense of a person and making them ponder over the power of Allah. The other is ayat ul Shara’iya which are the proofs taken from Qur’anic verses. The argument of Zaid was irrefutable by the pagans of Makkah.

Imam Hakim says that, Zaid ibn Amr had met the Prophet ﷺ at a place called Baldah, near Makkah. This was before the prophethood.
