Al-Mundhiri recorded the following chapter in his book Al-Targhib wal-Tarhib:

الترهيب من الغضب والترغيب في دفعه وكظمه وما يفعل عند الغضب

Discouraging anger and inspiring resistance to it and suppression of it, and what to do when angry.

Abu Huraira reported: A man came to the Prophet and he said, “Advise me.” The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

لَا تَغْضَبْ

Do not be angry.

The man repeated his request and the Prophet said:

لَا تَغْضَبْ

Do not be angry.

Humayd ibn Abdur Rahman reported: A man said, “O Messenger of Allah, instruct me.” The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

لَا تَغْضَبْ

Do not be angry.

The man said:

فَفَكَّرْتُ حِينَ قَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَا قَالَ فَإِذَا الْغَضَبُ يَجْمَعُ الشَّرَّ كُلَّهُ

I thought about what the Prophet said and it occurred to me that anger gives rise to every evil.

Abdullah ibn Amr reported: He asked the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, “What will distance me from the anger of Allah?” The Prophet said:

لَا تَغْضَبْ

Do not be angry.

Al-Ahnaf ibn Qays reported: A man said, “O Messenger of Allah, give me a word that will benefit me, but keep it short so I can understand it.” The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

لَا تَغْضَبْ

Do not be angry.

The man repeated that question and each time the Prophet said:

لَا تَغْضَبْ

Do not be angry.

Abu Darda reported: I said, “O Messenger of Allah, tell me about a deed that will admit me into Paradise.” The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

لا تَغْضَبْ وَلَكَ الْجَنَّةُ

Do not be angry and you will have Paradise.

Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

لَيْسَ الشَّدِيدُ بِالصُّرَعَةِ إِنَّمَا الشَّدِيدُ الَّذِي يَمْلِكُ نَفْسَهُ عِنْدَ الْغَضَبِ

The strong are not the best wrestlers. Verily, the strong are only those who control themselves when they are angry.

In another narration, the Prophet said:

إِنَّ الشَّدِيدَ لَيْسَ الَّذِي يَغْلِبُ النَّاسَ وَلَكِنَّ الشَّدِيدَ مَنْ غَلَبَ نَفْسَهُ

Verily, the strong are not those who defeat people. Rather, the strong are those who defeat their ego.

Ibn Umar reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

مَا مِنْ جُرْعَةٍ أَعْظَمُ أَجْرًا عِنْدَ اللَّهِ مِنْ جُرْعَةِ غَيْظٍ كَظَمَهَا عَبْدٌ ابْتِغَاءَ وَجْهِ اللَّهِ

There is nothing swallowed with a greater reward from Allah than a servant who swallows his rage, seeking thereby the countenance of Allah.

Sulayman ibn Surad reported: Two people insulted each other in the presence of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and the eyes of one of them became red like embers and the veins of his neck were swelling. The Prophet said:

إِنِّي لَأَعْرِفُ كَلِمَةً لَوْ قَالَهَا لَذَهَبَ عَنْهُ الَّذِي يَجِدُ أَعُوذُ بِاللَّهِ مِنْ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيمِ

Verily, I know a word he could say to calm himself: I seek refuge in Allah from the cursed Satan.
