Chapter 63: Repentance, following evil with good

Al-Mundhiri records in his book al-Targhib wal-Tarhib:

Encouragement to repent, taking initiative in it, and following an evil deed with a good deed.

Source: al-Targhīb wal-Tarhīb 4/45

Abu Musa reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

Verily, Allah Almighty stretches out His hand by night to accept the repentance of those who sin by day, and He stretches out His hand by day to accept the repentance of those who sin by night, until the sun rises from the west.

Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said,

Whoever repents before the sun rises from the west, Allah will accept his repentance.

Safwan ibn ‘Assal reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

Verily, towards the Western sun is an open gate the length of which is seventy years of travel, It will continue to be open for repentance until the sun rises from there. When the sun rises from there, the faith of any soul will not benefit it had it not had faith earlier or earned goodness from its faith.

Abu Huraira reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

If your sins were to reach to the heavens and then you repented, Allah would still accept your repentance.

Anas ibn Malik reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

All of the children of Adam are sinners, and the best sinners are those who repent.

Abu Huraira reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

A servant committed a sin and he said: O Allah, forgive my sin! Allah Almighty said: My servant has committed a sin and he knows he has a Lord who forgives sins and holds him accountable. Then the servant returned to his sin and he said: O Allah, forgive my sin! Allah said: My servant has committed a sin and he knows he has a Lord who forgives sins and holds him accountable. Then the servant returned to his sin and he said: O Allah, forgive my sin! Allah said: My servant has committed a sin and he knows he has a Lord who forgives sins and holds him accountable, so do what you will for I have forgiven you.

Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

Verily, when the servant commits a sin, a black mark appears upon his heart. If he abandons the sin, seeks forgiveness, and repents, then his heart will be polished. If he returns to the sin, the blackness will be increased until it overcomes his heart. It is the covering that Allah has mentioned: No, rather a covering is over their hearts from what they have earned. (83:14)

Ibn Abbas reported: The Quraysh said to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, “Call upon your Lord to turn mount Safa into gold for us and we will have faith in you.” The Prophet said:

And you will do so?

They said yes. The Prophet supplicated to Allah and Gabriel came to him and he said, “Verily, your Lord Almighty greets you with peace. He says that if you wish, I will turn the mount of Safa into gold for them, but whoever among them disbelieves after that will be punished with a great punishment like no one else in the worlds. And if you wish, the door of repentance and mercy will be opened for them.” The Prophet said:

Rather, the door of repentance and mercy.

Ibn Umar reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

Mu’adh ibn Jabal reported: I said, “O Messenger of Allah, instruct me.” The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

Worship Allah as if you can see Him and consider yourself already dead. Remember Allah by every rock and tree. If you commit a bad deed, accompany it with a good deed, secretly in secret and publicly in public.

No one has a greater sense of honor than Allah, so He has made obscenities unlawful in public and in private. And no one loves to be praised more than Allah.

‘Imran ibn Husayn reported: A woman of Juhaynah came to the Prophet of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, while she was pregnant from adultery. She said, “O Prophet of Allah, I have committed a legal offense, so impose it upon me.” The Prophet called for her guardian and he said:

Be kind to her and when she gives birth, bring her to me.

He did so and the Prophet ordered for her shroud to be wrapped over her, then her ordered her to be stoned and he prayed over her. Umar said, “Do you prayer over one who committed adultery?” The Prophet said:

She had repented with such repentance that, if it had been divided between seventy people of Medina, it would have reached beyond them. Have you found any repentance better than this, that she gave up her life for Allah Almighty?

Abu Sa’id al-Khudri reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

There was a man among the children of Israel who had killed ninety nine people. Then he set out seeking repentance. He came upon a monk and he asked him if his repentance would be accepted. The monk said no, so the man killed him. He continued asking until another man advised him to go to a certain village. He set out for it but death overtook him on the way. As he died, he turned his chest toward the village. The angel of mercy and the angel of punishment argued about him among themselves. Allah ordered his destination to move closer to him and his old village to move away. Then, Allah ordered the angels to measure the distance between his body and the two villages. He was found to be one span closer to his destination, so he was forgiven.

Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace be and blessings on him, said:

Allah Almighty says: I am as My servant expects of Me and I am with him as he remembers Me. If he remembers Me in himself, I will remember him in Myself. If he mentions Me in a gathering, I will mention him in a greater gathering. When he draws near Me by the span of his hand, I draw near him by the length of a cubit. When he draws near Me by the length of a cubit, I draw near him by the length of a fathom. When he comes to Me walking, I come to him running.

Anas reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

Allah is more delighted at the repentance of His servant than one of you who lost his riding animal on a journey in a barren land while it carries his food and drink. He loses all hope as he comes to a tree to lie down in its shade, despairing over his animal, but suddenly he finds it standing over him. He takes hold of its reins and then he greatly rejoices, saying: O Allah, You are my servant and I am your Lord! He makes a mistake due to his great joy.

‘Uqbah ibn ‘Amir reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

Verily, the parable of one who commits a sin and then performs is a good is that of a man wearing a tightened coat of mail strangling him. Then, he performs a good deed and one of its rings loosens, then he performs another good deed and another ring loosens, until he is set free to walk the earth.

He said, “As for me, I testify there is no God but Allah, along without any partners, and that you are the Messenger of Allah.” The Prophet said:
