Chapter 88: Clarifying that whoever died upon disbelief then he is in the Fire, and no intercession or relationship with those who are close to Allah will be of any avail for him
باب بَيَانِ أَنَّ مَنْ مَاتَ عَلَى الْكُفْرِ فَهُوَ فِي النَّارِ وَلاَ تَنَالُهُ شَفَاعَةٌ وَلاَ تَنْفَعُهُ قَرَابَةُ الْمُقَرَّبِينَ
Sahih Muslim 203
Anas reported
Verily, a person said: Messenger of Allah , where is my father? He said: (He) is in the Fire. When he turned away, he (the Holy Prophet ) called him and said: Verily my father and your father are in the Fire.حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا عَفَّانُ، حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ، عَنْ ثَابِتٍ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ، أَنَّ رَجُلاً، قَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَيْنَ أَبِي قَالَ " فِي النَّارِ " . فَلَمَّا قَفَّى دَعَاهُ فَقَالَ " إِنَّ أَبِي وَأَبَاكَ فِي النَّارِ " .
Chapter 17: It is recommended to pass water and milk etc., to the right of the one who drinks first
باب اسْتِحْبَابِ إِدَارَةِ الْمَاءِ وَاللَّبَنِ وَنَحْوِهِمَا عَنْ يَمِينِ الْمُبْتَدِئِ
Sahih Muslim 2030 a
Sahl b. Sa'd Sa'idi reported that Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) was given a drink, and he drank from that, and there was on his right side a boy. and on his left some old men. He said to the boy
Do you permit me to give it to them (the old men), but that boy said: by God. I will not give preference at your hand over me in my share. He (the narrator) said that Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) then gave it in his hand.حَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، عَنْ مَالِكِ بْنِ أَنَسٍ، فِيمَا قُرِئَ عَلَيْهِ عَنْ أَبِي حَازِمٍ، عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ السَّاعِدِيِّ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم أُتِيَ بِشَرَابٍ فَشَرِبَ مِنْهُ وَعَنْ يَمِينِهِ غُلاَمٌ وَعَنْ يَسَارِهِ أَشْيَاخٌ فَقَالَ لِلْغُلاَمِ " أَتَأْذَنُ لِي أَنْ أُعْطِيَ هَؤُلاَءِ " . فَقَالَ الْغُلاَمُ لاَ . وَاللَّهِ لاَ أُوثِرُ بِنَصِيبِي مِنْكَ أَحَدًا " . قَالَ فَتَلَّهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم فِي يَدِهِ .
Sahih Muslim 2030 b
This hadith is reported on the authority of Sahl b. Sa'd with a slight variation of wording.
حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ يَحْيَى، أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ الْعَزِيزِ بْنُ أَبِي حَازِمٍ، ح وَحَدَّثَنَاهُ قُتَيْبَةُ بْنُ، سَعِيدٍ حَدَّثَنَا يَعْقُوبُ، - يَعْنِي ابْنَ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ الْقَارِيَّ - كِلاَهُمَا عَنْ أَبِي حَازِمٍ، عَنْ سَهْلِ، بْنِ سَعْدٍ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم . بِمِثْلِهِ وَلَمْ يَقُولاَ فَتَلَّهُ . وَلَكِنْ فِي رِوَايَةِ يَعْقُوبَ قَالَ فَأَعْطَاهُ إِيَّاهُ .
Chapter 18: It is recommended to lick one's fingers and wipe the bowl, and to eat a piece of food that is dropped after removing any dirt on it. It is disliked to wipe one's hand before licking it, because of the possibility that the blessing of the food may be in that remaining part. The Sunnah is to eat with three fingers
باب اسْتِحْبَابِ لَعْقِ الأَصَابِعِ وَالْقَصْعَةِ وَأَكْلِ اللُّقْمَةِ السَّاقِطَةِ بَعْدَ مَسْحِ مَا يُصِيبُهَا مِنْ أَذًى وَكَرَاهَةِ مَسْحِ الْيَدِ قَبْلَ لَعْقِهَا
Sahih Muslim 2031 a
Ibn 'Abbas reported Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him.) as saying
When any one of you eats food he should not wipe his hand until he has licked it or has it licked*.حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، وَعَمْرٌو النَّاقِدُ، وَإِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، وَابْنُ أَبِي عُمَرَ، - قَالَ إِسْحَاقُ أَخْبَرَنَا وَقَالَ الآخَرُونَ، حَدَّثَنَا - سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ عَمْرٍو، عَنْ عَطَاءٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ، عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم " إِذَا أَكَلَ أَحَدُكُمْ طَعَامًا فَلاَ يَمْسَحْ يَدَهُ حَتَّى يَلْعَقَهَا أَوْ يُلْعِقَهَا " .
Sahih Muslim 2031 b
Ibn 'Abbas reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying
When any one of you eats food he should not wipe his hand until he has licked it or have it licked.حَدَّثَنِي هَارُونُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، حَدَّثَنَا حَجَّاجُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ، ح وَحَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ بْنُ حُمَيْدٍ، أَخْبَرَنِي أَبُو عَاصِمٍ، جَمِيعًا عَنِ ابْنِ جُرَيْجٍ، ح وَحَدَّثَنَا زُهَيْرُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ، - وَاللَّفْظُ لَهُ - حَدَّثَنَا رَوْحُ بْنُ عُبَادَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ جُرَيْجٍ، قَالَ سَمِعْتُ عَطَاءً، يَقُولُ سَمِعْتُ ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ، يَقُولُ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم " إِذَا أَكَلَ أَحَدُكُمْ مِنَ الطَّعَامِ فَلاَ يَمْسَحْ يَدَهُ حَتَّى يَلْعَقَهَا أَوْ يُلْعِقَهَا " .
Sahih Muslim 2032 a
Ibn Ka'b b. Malik reported on the authority of his father that he saw Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) licking his three fingers (after having finished the food). Ibn Hatim made no mention of" three". This hadith is also narrated through another chain of transmitters.
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، وَزُهَيْرُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ، وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ حَاتِمٍ، قَالُوا حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ، مَهْدِيٍّ عَنْ سُفْيَانَ، عَنْ سَعْدِ بْنِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، عَنِ ابْنِ كَعْبِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، قَالَ رَأَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم يَلْعَقُ أَصَابِعَهُ الثَّلاَثَ مِنَ الطَّعَامِ . وَلَمْ يَذْكُرِ ابْنُ حَاتِمٍ الثَّلاَثَ . وَقَالَ ابْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ فِي رِوَايَتِهِ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ كَعْبٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ .
Sahih Muslim 2032 b
Ibn Ka'b b. Malik reported on the authority of his father that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to eat (food) with three fingers and he licked his hand before wiping it (with towel).
حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ يَحْيَى، أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ، عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ عُرْوَةَ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ، بْنِ سَعْدٍ عَنِ ابْنِ كَعْبِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، قَالَ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم يَأْكُلُ بِثَلاَثِ أَصَابِعَ وَيَلْعَقُ يَدَهُ قَبْلَ أَنْ يَمْسَحَهَا .
Sahih Muslim 2032 c
'Abdullah b. Ka'b reported that his father Ka'b narrated to him that Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) used to eat with three fingers and when he had finished (eating), he licked them.
وَحَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ نُمَيْرٍ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي، حَدَّثَنَا هِشَامٌ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ، بْنِ سَعْدٍ أَنَّ عَبْدَ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنَ كَعْبِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ، - أَوْ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ كَعْبٍ - أَخْبَرَهُ عَنْ أَبِيهِ، كَعْبٍ أَنَّهُ حَدَّثَهُمْ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم كَانَ يَأْكُلُ بِثَلاَثِ أَصَابِعَ فَإِذَا فَرَغَ لَعِقَهَا .
Sahih Muslim 2032 d
A hadith like this has been reported on the authority of Ka'b b. Malik through another chain of transmitters.
وَحَدَّثَنَاهُ أَبُو كُرَيْبٍ، حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ نُمَيْرٍ، حَدَّثَنَا هِشَامٌ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ، أَنَّحَدَّثَاهُ - أَوْ، أَحَدُهُمَا - عَنْ أَبِيهِ، كَعْبِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم بِمِثْلِهِ .
Sahih Muslim 2033 a
Jabir reported that Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) commanded the licking of fingers and the dish, saying
You do not know in what portion the blessing lies."وَحَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ بْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ، عَنْ أَبِي الزُّبَيْرِ، عَنْ جَابِرٍ، أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم أَمَرَ بِلَعْقِ الأَصَابِعِ وَالصَّحْفَةِ وَقَالَ " إِنَّكُمْ لاَ تَدْرُونَ فِي أَيِّهِ الْبَرَكَةُ " .
Sahih Muslim 2033 b
Jabir reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying
When any one of you drops a mouthful he should pick it up and remove any of the filth on it, and then eat it, and should not leave it for the Satan, and should not wipe his hand with towel until he has licked his fingers, for he does not know in what portion of the food the blessing lies.حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ نُمَيْرٍ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي، حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ أَبِي الزُّبَيْرِ، عَنْ جَابِرٍ، قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم " إِذَا وَقَعَتْ لُقْمَةُ أَحَدِكُمْ فَلْيَأْخُذْهَا فَلْيُمِطْ مَا كَانَ بِهَا مِنْ أَذًى وَلْيَأْكُلْهَا وَلاَ يَدَعْهَا لِلشَّيْطَانِ وَلاَ يَمْسَحْ يَدَهُ بِالْمِنْدِيلِ حَتَّى يَلْعَقَ أَصَابِعَهُ فَإِنَّهُ لاَ يَدْرِي فِي أَىِّ طَعَامِهِ الْبَرَكَةُ " .
Sahih Muslim 2033 c
This hadith has been narrated on the authority of Sufyan with the same chain of transmitters but with a slight variation of wording.
وَحَدَّثَنَاهُ إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو دَاوُدَ الْحَفَرِيُّ، ح وَحَدَّثَنِيهِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ، رَافِعٍ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ، كِلاَهُمَا عَنْ سُفْيَانَ، بِهَذَا الإِسْنَادِ . مِثْلَهُ . وَفِي حَدِيثِهِمَا " وَلاَ يَمْسَحْ يَدَهُ بِالْمِنْدِيلِ حَتَّى يَلْعَقَهَا أَوْ يُلْعِقَهَا " . وَمَا بَعْدَهُ .

Jabir reported
I heard Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying: The Satan is present with any one of you in everything he does; he is present even when he eats food; so if any one of you drops a mouthful he should remove away anything filthy on it and eat it and not leave for the devil; and when he finishes (food) he should lick his fingers, for he does not know in what portion of his food the blessing lies.حَدَّثَنَا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا جَرِيرٌ، عَنِ الأَعْمَشِ، عَنْ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ، عَنْ جَابِرٍ، قَالَ سَمِعْتُ النَّبِيَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم يَقُولُ " إِنَّ الشَّيْطَانَ يَحْضُرُ أَحَدَكُمْ عِنْدَ كُلِّ شَىْءٍ مِنْ شَأْنِهِ حَتَّى يَحْضُرَهُ عِنْدَ طَعَامِهِ فَإِذَا سَقَطَتْ مِنْ أَحَدِكُمُ اللُّقْمَةُ فَلْيُمِطْ مَا كَانَ بِهَا مِنْ أَذًى ثُمَّ لْيَأْكُلْهَا وَلاَ يَدَعْهَا لِلشَّيْطَانِ فَإِذَا فَرَغَ فَلْيَلْعَقْ أَصَابِعَهُ فَإِنَّهُ لاَ يَدْرِي فِي أَىِّ طَعَامِهِ تَكُونُ الْبَرَكَةُ " .
Sahih Muslim 2033 e
This hadith is reported on the authority of A'mash with the same chain of transmitters but with a slight variation of words but no mention is made of the first part of the hadith, i. e. the Satan is present with any one of you.
وَحَدَّثَنَاهُ أَبُو كُرَيْبٍ، وَإِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، جَمِيعًا عَنْ أَبِي مُعَاوِيَةَ، عَنِ الأَعْمَشِ، بِهَذَا الإِسْنَادِ " إِذَا سَقَطَتْ لُقْمَةُ أَحَدِكُمْ " . إِلَى آخِرِ الْحَدِيثِ وَلَمْ يَذْكُرْ أَوَّلَ الْحَدِيثِ " إِنَّ الشَّيْطَانَ يَحْضُرُ أَحَدَكُمْ " .
Sahih Muslim 2033 f
Jabir reported from Allah's Messenger. (ﷺ) about mentioning the licking (of fingers) and the (falling of) the mouthful.
وَحَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ فُضَيْلٍ، عَنِ الأَعْمَشِ، عَنْ أَبِي، صَالِحٍ وَأَبِي سُفْيَانَ عَنْ جَابِرٍ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم فِي ذِكْرِ اللَّعْقِ . وَعَنْ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ عَنْ جَابِرٍ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم وَذَكَرَ اللُّقْمَةَ نَحْوَ حَدِيثِهِمَا .
Sahih Muslim 2034
Anas reported that when Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) ate food he licked his three fingers, and he said
When any one of you drops a mouthful he should remove anything filthy from it and then eat it, and should not leave it for the Satan. He also commanded us that we should wipe the dish saying: You do not know in what portion of your food the blessing lies.وَحَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ حَاتِمٍ، وَأَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ نَافِعٍ الْعَبْدِيُّ قَالاَ حَدَّثَنَا بَهْزٌ، حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ، بْنُ سَلَمَةَ حَدَّثَنَا ثَابِتٌ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم كَانَ إِذَا أَكَلَ طَعَامًا لَعِقَ أَصَابِعَهُ الثَّلاَثَ . قَالَ وَقَالَ " إِذَا سَقَطَتْ لُقْمَةُ أَحَدِكُمْ فَلْيُمِطْ عَنْهَا الأَذَى وَلْيَأْكُلْهَا وَلاَ يَدَعْهَا لِلشَّيْطَانِ " . وَأَمَرَنَا أَنْ نَسْلُتَ الْقَصْعَةَ قَالَ " فَإِنَّكُمْ لاَ تَدْرُونَ فِي أَىِّ طَعَامِكُمُ الْبَرَكَةُ " .
Sahih Muslim 2035 a
Abu Huraira reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying
When any one of you eats food he should lick his fingers, for he does not know in what part of the food sticking to his fingers the blessing lies.وَحَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ حَاتِمٍ، حَدَّثَنَا بَهْزٌ، حَدَّثَنَا وُهَيْبٌ، حَدَّثَنَا سُهَيْلٌ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ " إِذَا أَكَلَ أَحَدُكُمْ فَلْيَلْعَقْ أَصَابِعَهُ فَإِنَّهُ لاَ يَدْرِي فِي أَيَّتِهِنَّ الْبَرَكَةُ " .

This hadith has been reported on the authority of Hammad with the same chain of transmitters, but with a slight variation of wording.
وَحَدَّثَنِيهِ أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ نَافِعٍ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ، - يَعْنِي ابْنَ مَهْدِيٍّ - قَالاَ حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادٌ، بِهَذَا الإِسْنَادِ غَيْرَ أَنَّهُ قَالَ " وَلْيَسْلُتْ أَحْدُكُمُ الصَّحْفَةَ " . وَقَالَ " فِي أَىِّ طَعَامِكُمُ الْبَرَكَةُ أَوْ يُبَارَكُ لَكُمْ " .
Chapter 19: What the guest should do if he is accompanied by someone who was not invited by the host; it is recommended for the host to give permission to the one who has accompanied the guest
باب مَا يَفْعَلُ الضَّيْفُ إِذَا تَبِعَهُ غَيْرُ مَنْ دَعَاهُ صَاحِبُ الطَّعَامِ وَاسْتِحْبَابُ إِذْنِ صَاحِبِ الطَّعَامِ لِلتَّابِعِ
Sahih Muslim 2036 a
Abu Mas'ud Ansari reported that a person from the Ansar who was called Abu Shu'aib had a slave who was a butcher (by profession). He (Abu Mas'ud) saw Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) and found signs of hunger on his face. He said to the servant
0 ye, prepare for us food sufficient for five persons, for I intend to invite Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) who would be the fifth amongst the five. He (the narrator) reported that he then prepared the food and came to Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) and invited all the five (including him) who was the fifth amongst them to the feast. A man followed him and when Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) reached the door, he said: This man has followed us; if you like you may permit him (to join the meal) and if you like he can go back. Thereupon the person said: Allah's Messenger, I permit him.حَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، وَعُثْمَانُ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، - وَتَقَارَبَا فِي اللَّفْظِ - قَالاَ حَدَّثَنَا جَرِيرٌ، عَنِ الأَعْمَشِ، عَنْ أَبِي وَائِلٍ، عَنْ أَبِي مَسْعُودٍ الأَنْصَارِيِّ، قَالَ كَانَ رَجُلٌ مِنَ الأَنْصَارِ يُقَالُ لَهُ أَبُو شُعَيْبٍ وَكَانَ لَهُ غُلاَمٌ لَحَّامٌ فَرَأَى رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم فَعَرَفَ فِي وَجْهِهِ الْجُوعَ فَقَالَ لِغُلاَمِهِ وَيْحَكَ اصْنَعْ لَنَا طَعَامًا لِخَمْسَةِ نَفَرٍ فَإِنِّي أُرِيدُ أَنْ أَدْعُوَ النَّبِيَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم خَامِسَ خَمْسَةٍ . قَالَ فَصَنَعَ ثُمَّ أَتَى النَّبِيَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم فَدَعَاهُ خَامِسَ خَمْسَةٍ وَاتَّبَعَهُمْ رَجُلٌ فَلَمَّا بَلَغَ الْبَابَ قَالَ النَّبِيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم " إِنَّ هَذَا اتَّبَعَنَا فَإِنْ شِئْتَ أَنْ تَأْذَنَ لَهُ وَإِنْ شِئْتَ رَجَعَ " . قَالَ لاَ بَلْ آذَنُ لَهُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ .

This hadith has been reported on the authority of Abu Mas'ud Ansari through another chain of transmitters.
وَحَدَّثَنَاهُ أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، وَإِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، جَمِيعًا عَنْ أَبِي مُعَاوِيَةَ، ح وَحَدَّثَنَاهُ نَصْرُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ الْجَهْضَمِيُّ، وَأَبُو سَعِيدٍ الأَشَجُّ قَالاَ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو أُسَامَةَ، ح وَحَدَّثَنَا عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُعَاذٍ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي، حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ، ح وَحَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ الدَّارِمِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يُوسُفَ، عَنْ سُفْيَانَ، كُلُّهُمْ عَنِ الأَعْمَشِ، عَنْ أَبِي وَائِلٍ، عَنْ أَبِي مَسْعُودٍ، بِهَذَا الْحَدِيثِ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم بِنَحْوِ حَدِيثِ جَرِيرٍ . قَالَ نَصْرُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ فِي رِوَايَتِهِ لِهَذَا الْحَدِيثِ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو أُسَامَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا الأَعْمَشُ، حَدَّثَنَا شَقِيقُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مَسْعُودٍ، الأَنْصَارِيُّ . وَسَاقَ الْحَدِيثَ .

Sahih Muslim 2037
Anas reported that
Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) had a Persian neighbour who made excellent soup. He prepared some for Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) and then came to him to invite him to eat. He (Allah's Messenger) said, "and her too," referring to `Aisha. The man said "No," so Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) then said "No." He returned later to invite him again, so Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said "and her too." The man said "No," so Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) then said "No." He returned another time to invite him and Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "and her too." The man said yes on this third occasion, and they then stood eagerly to go out together to the man's home.وَحَدَّثَنِي زُهَيْرُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ، حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ هَارُونَ، أَخْبَرَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ، عَنْ ثَابِتٍ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ، أَنَّ جَارًا، لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم فَارِسِيًّا كَانَ طَيِّبَ الْمَرَقِ فَصَنَعَ لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم ثُمَّ جَاءَ يَدْعُوهُ فَقَالَ " وَهَذِهِ " . لِعَائِشَةَ فَقَالَ لاَ . فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم " لاَ " فَعَادَ يَدْعُوهُ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم " وَهَذِهِ " . قَالَ لاَ . قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم " لاَ " . ثُمَّ عَادَ يَدْعُوهُ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم " وَهَذِهِ " . قَالَ نَعَمْ . فِي الثَّالِثَةِ . فَقَامَا يَتَدَافَعَانِ حَتَّى أَتَيَا مَنْزِلَهُ .
Chapter 20: It is permissible to take someone else to the house of one who you are certain will approve of that and will not mind. It is recommended to gather to eat
باب جَوَازِ اسْتِتْبَاعِهِ غَيْرَهُ إِلَى دَارِ مَنْ يَثِقُ بِرِضَاهُ بِذَلِكَ وَيَتَحَقَّقُهُ تَحَقُّقًا تَامًّا وَاسْتِحْبَابِ الاِجْتِمَاعِ عَلَى الطَّعَامِ
Sahih Muslim 2038 a
Abu Huraira reported that Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) went out (of his house) one day or one night, and there he found Abu Bakr and 'Umar also. He said
What has brought you out of your houses at this hour? They said: Allah's Messenger, it is hunger. Thereupon he said: By Him in Whose Hand is my life, what has brought you out has brought me out too; get up. They got up along with him. and (all of them) came to the house of an Ansari, but he was not at home. When his wife saw him she said: Most welcome, and Allah's Messenger (may peace be Upon him) said to her: Where is so and so? She said: He has gone to get some fresh water for us. When the Ansari came and he saw Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) and his two Companions, he said: Praise be to Allah, no one has more honourable guests today than I (have). He then went out and brought them a bunch of ripe dates, dry dates and fresh dates, and said: Eat some of them. He then took hold of his long knife (for slaughtering a goat or a sheep). Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said to him: Beware of killing a milch animal. He slaughtered a sheep for them and after they had eaten of it and of the bunch and drank, and when they had taken their fill and had been fully satisfied with the drink, Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said to Abu Bakr and Umar: By Him in Whose Hand is my life, you will certainly be questioned about this bounty on the Day of judgment. Hunger brought you out of your house, then you did not return until this bounty came to you.حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا خَلَفُ بْنُ خَلِيفَةَ، عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ كَيْسَانَ، عَنْ أَبِي حَازِمٍ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، قَالَ خَرَجَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم ذَاتَ يَوْمٍ أَوْ لَيْلَةٍ فَإِذَا هُوَ بِأَبِي بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرَ فَقَالَ " مَا أَخْرَجَكُمَا مِنْ بُيُوتِكُمَا هَذِهِ السَّاعَةَ " . قَالاَ الْجُوعُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ . قَالَ " وَأَنَا وَالَّذِي نَفْسِي بِيَدِهِ لأَخْرَجَنِي الَّذِي أَخْرَجَكُمَا قُومُوا " . فَقَامُوا مَعَهُ فَأَتَى رَجُلاً مِنَ الأَنْصَارِ فَإِذَا هُوَ لَيْسَ فِي بَيْتِهِ فَلَمَّا رَأَتْهُ الْمَرْأَةُ قَالَتْ مَرْحَبًا وَأَهْلاً . فَقَالَ لَهَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم " أَيْنَ فُلاَنٌ " . قَالَتْ ذَهَبَ يَسْتَعْذِبُ لَنَا مِنَ الْمَاءِ . إِذْ جَاءَ الأَنْصَارِيُّ فَنَظَرَ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم وَصَاحِبَيْهِ ثُمَّ قَالَ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ مَا أَحَدٌ الْيَوْمَ أَكْرَمَ أَضْيَافًا مِنِّي - قَالَ - فَانْطَلَقَ فَجَاءَهُمْ بِعِذْقٍ فِيهِ بُسْرٌ وَتَمْرٌ وَرُطَبٌ فَقَالَ كُلُوا مِنْ هَذِهِ . وَأَخَذَ الْمُدْيَةَ فَقَالَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم " إِيَّاكَ وَالْحَلُوبَ " . فَذَبَحَ لَهُمْ فَأَكَلُوا مِنَ الشَّاةِ وَمِنْ ذَلِكَ الْعِذْقِ وَشَرِبُوا فَلَمَّا أَنْ شَبِعُوا وَرَوُوا قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم لأَبِي بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرَ " وَالَّذِي نَفْسِي بِيَدِهِ لَتُسْأَلُنَّ عَنْ هَذَا النَّعِيمِ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ أَخْرَجَكُمْ مِنْ بُيُوتِكُمُ الْجُوعُ ثُمَّ لَمْ تَرْجِعُوا حَتَّى أَصَابَكُمْ هَذَا النَّعِيمُ " .

One day while Abu Bakr was sitting and there was with him Umar also there came to them Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) and he said: What makes you stay here? They said: It is hunger that has brought us out from our houses. By Him Who has stint you with Truth; the rest of the hadith is the same.وَحَدَّثَنِي إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ مَنْصُورٍ، أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو هِشَامٍ، - يَعْنِي الْمُغِيرَةَ بْنَ سَلَمَةَ - حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْوَاحِدِ بْنُ زِيَادٍ، حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو حَازِمٍ، قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ، يَقُولُ بَيْنَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ قَاعِدٌ وَعُمَرُ مَعَهُ إِذْ أَتَاهُمَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم فَقَالَ " مَا أَقْعَدَكُمَا هَا هُنَا " . قَالاَ أَخْرَجَنَا الْجُوعُ مِنْ بُيُوتِنَا وَالَّذِي بَعَثَكَ بِالْحَقِّ . ثُمَّ ذَكَرَ نَحْوَ حَدِيثِ خَلَفِ بْنِ خَلِيفَةَ .

Jabir b. 'Abdullah reported
When the ditch was dug, I saw Allah's Messenger (may peace he upon him) feeling very hungry. I came to my wife and said to her: Is there anything with you? I have seen Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) feeling extremely hungry. She brought out a bag of provisions which contained a sa', of barley. We had also with us a lamb. I slaughtered it. She ground the flour. She finished (this work) along with me. I cut it into pieces and put it in the earthen pot and then returned to Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) (for inviting him). She said: Do not humiliate me in the presence of Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) and those who are with him. When I came to him I whispered to him saying: Allah's Messenger, we have slaughtered a lamb for you and she has ground a sa' of barley which we had with us. So you come along with a group of people with you. Thereupon Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said loudly: O people of the ditch, Jabir has arranged a feast for you, so (come along). Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said: Do not remove your earthen pot from the hearth and do not bake the bread from the kneaded flour until I come. So I came and Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) came and he was ahead of the people; and I came to my wife and she said (to me): You will be humbled. I said: I did what you had asked me to do. She (his wife) said: I brought out the kneaded flour and Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) put some saliva of his in that and blessed It. He then put saliva in the earthen pot and blessed it and then said. Call another baker who can bake with you. and bring out the soup from it, but do not remove it from the hearth, and the guests were one thousand. (Jabir said): I take an oath by Allah that all of them ate (the food to their fill) until they left it and went away and our earthen pot was brimming over as before, and so was the case with our flour, or as Dahhak (another narrator) said: It (the flour) was in the same condition and loaves had been prepared from that.حَدَّثَنِي حَجَّاجُ بْنُ الشَّاعِرِ، حَدَّثَنِي الضَّحَّاكُ بْنُ مَخْلَدٍ، مِنْ رُقْعَةٍ عَارَضَ لِي بِهَا ثُمَّ قَرَأَهُ عَلَىَّ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنَاهُ حَنْظَلَةُ بْنُ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدُ بْنُ مِينَاءَ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ جَابِرَ بْنَ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ يَقُولُ لَمَّا حُفِرَ الْخَنْدَقُ رَأَيْتُ بِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم خَمَصًا فَانْكَفَأْتُ إِلَى امْرَأَتِي فَقُلْتُ لَهَا هَلْ عِنْدَكِ شَىْءٌ فَإِنِّي رَأَيْتُ بِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم خَمَصًا شَدِيدًا . فَأَخْرَجَتْ لِي جِرَابًا فِيهِ صَاعٌ مِنْ شَعِيرٍ وَلَنَا بُهَيْمَةٌ دَاجِنٌ - قَالَ - فَذَبَحْتُهَا وَطَحَنَتْ فَفَرَغَتْ إِلَى فَرَاغِي فَقَطَّعْتُهَا فِي بُرْمَتِهَا ثُمَّ وَلَّيْتُ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم فَقَالَتْ لاَ تَفْضَحْنِي بِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم وَمَنْ مَعَهُ - قَالَ - فَجِئْتُهُ فَسَارَرْتُهُ فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّا قَدْ ذَبَحْنَا بُهَيْمَةً لَنَا وَطَحَنَتْ صَاعًا مِنْ شَعِيرٍ كَانَ عِنْدَنَا فَتَعَالَ أَنْتَ فِي نَفَرٍ مَعَكَ . فَصَاحَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم وَقَالَ " يَا أَهْلَ الْخَنْدَقِ إِنَّ جَابِرًا قَدْ صَنَعَ لَكُمْ سُورًا فَحَيَّهَلاَ بِكُمْ " . وَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم " لاَ تُنْزِلُنَّ بُرْمَتَكُمْ وَلاَ تَخْبِزُنَّ عَجِينَتَكُمْ حَتَّى أَجِيءَ " . فَجِئْتُ وَجَاءَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم يَقْدُمُ النَّاسَ حَتَّى جِئْتُ امْرَأَتِي فَقَالَتْ بِكَ وَبِكَ . فَقُلْتُ قَدْ فَعَلْتُ الَّذِي قُلْتِ لِي . فَأَخْرَجْتُ لَهُ عَجِينَتَنَا فَبَصَقَ فِيهَا وَبَارَكَ ثُمَّ عَمَدَ إِلَى بُرْمَتِنَا فَبَصَقَ فِيهَا وَبَارَكَ ثُمَّ قَالَ " ادْعِي خَابِزَةً فَلْتَخْبِزْ مَعَكِ وَاقْدَحِي مِنْ بُرْمَتِكُمْ وَلاَ تُنْزِلُوهَا " . وَهُمْ أَلْفٌ فَأُقْسِمُ بِاللَّهِ لأَكَلُوا حَتَّى تَرَكُوهُ وَانْحَرَفُوا وَإِنَّ بُرْمَتَنَا لَتَغِطُّ كَمَا هِيَ وَإِنَّ عَجِينَتَنَا - أَوْ كَمَا قَالَ الضَّحَّاكُ - لَتُخْبَزُ كَمَا هُوَ .
